Press Release

Gig Harbor Harbors the Blues for Local Musician: Canterwood Golf and Country Club not "up to par" regarding security.

This past Friday, September 6th, just an hour before an outdoor concert for the University of Puget Sound, local Jazz/Blues musician Michael Powers discovered he had been the victim of a burglary. When he arrived at his car, which was parked within the exclusive, gated community of Canterwood Golf and Country Club, he discovered that his one-of-a-kind, custom-made "Frameworks" guitar, together with other electronic musical equipment, had been taken from his car in broad daylight by forced entry into his vehicle. The irony is his car was parked "safely " within the exclusive "secure" gated community, directly in front of the clubhouse, presumably under the watchful eye of security staff.

To many fans who have experienced Powers’ performances over the past 20 years, his guitar is his signature trademark, much like famed blues guitarist B.B. King’s guitar "Lucille". Michael is well known for his professional attitude, and was determined not to cancel two shows that were scheduled that very evening, in Tacoma and in Seattle. "Michael is a most reliable and consummate professional musician. When he called 50 minutes before his scheduled show with news of the theft, I would not have expected that he could overcome his crushing sense of loss at this senseless theft. Yet he was able to carry on and subsequently put on a stunning (and under the circumstances gutsy) show", said Serni Solidarios (University of Puget Sound’s Director of Student Programs). Musical equipment was already in place for another act, the Red Elvis’s, and when fellow musician (and music store owner) Jack Dolan of Sluggo’s Music offered a loaner guitar, Powers was able to deliver a stirring performance to an audience unaware of his misfortune. For Michael Powers, a true artist and professional musician, in true show biz parlance, "the show must go on."

Powers filed reports for the loss of the guitar, PA system and CDs with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. The custom-made "Frameworks" guitar can’t be fully replaced by insurance, so Powers is offering a no-questions-asked reward for its return, and provides a phone number, 206-938-6683, and an email address, mp@michaelpowersmusic.com, for any information leading to its recovery. (The fact that this guitar is so unique and identifiable would seem to preclude the possibility that the thieves could somehow profit from its theft, either for their own personal use or by otherwise disposing of it: It is instantly recognizable by anyone who has seen Michael perform, and its use would almost certainly lead to apprehension of the culprit. Pictures of Michael playing this one-of-kind "Frameworks" guitar (and of all the missing gear) are posted on Michael’s website at http://www.michaelpowersmusic.com/canterwood.htm

"I’m trusting that whoever took this will appreciate that they’ve taken the tools of my trade, my livelihood, and I’m hopeful that they will find it in their hearts to return the gear," said Powers. Added Solidarios, "Michael’s guitar has been seen by and played for thousands of people, and it’s a trademark, like B.B. King’s Lucille, or Superman’s cape! It’s like a pop version of a Stradivarius, and Michael needs to get it back."
